Target marker detection

Nov 04, 2026
blog-post

Targets are printed markers with unique IDs that you place on or around the object you’re scanning. MAVO 3D can detect those IDs and use the targets to help optimize the 3D point cloud. Targets are widely used in computer vision applications, robot navigation and also surveying contexts.

MAVO 3D supports target marker detection with version 2.2 and uses them to optimize your scan after capture.

Download targets for your project

You can buy pre-made targets or print your own. You find a ready-to-print set of AprilTags for download here.

What are targets

AprilTags and ArUco are somewhat like QR codes.

Each marker has a high-contrast pattern which contains a unique id. This id can be detected and identified by the cameras robustly, even from farer away scanning positions.

In combination with our 3D engine, MAVO 3D is able to calculate the precise position in respect to your phones camera position, which improves 3D point cloud quality significantly and results in robust loop closures.

Supported target families

The currently supported marker families are AprilTags and ArUco markers. We plan to add more families in the future, and welcome requests for specific ones.

FAQ

Yes, the size is important. Make sure to set the printer settings to 100% zoom on A4 format and measure the actual printed size before you start the optimization to make sure, that MAVO 3D uses the correct scale.
Depends on the size of object, more targets means higher 3D reconstruction accuracy. We produce good results with 2-4 targets per room, but more are always better.
Position targets in areas where you pass them multiple times (to perform loop closures). You can lay them flat on the ground or surfaces or you can put them on the walls. Make sure that they do not move during scanning.
