Are all 3D scanning apps on the market the same?

Definetely not

There is a wide variety of 3D scanning apps, and they can vary significantly in how they capture, process and reconstruct 3D data.

Some apps might appear quite similar on the first impression. Typically you walk through an environment, move your phone around, and watch a 3D model being created.

What happens behind the UI can be very different.

3D scanning apps can use a different combination of camera, LiDAR and motion sensor data. They can process this data in various ways and and rely on different approaches to track the device’s position and correct drift.

These differences have a direct affect on the resulting 3D model output.

Some apps prioritize speed, others visual detail or focus on geometric accuracy and reliable measurements. They can also behave differently when you want to scan large spaces, either requiring you to capture single rooms or let you scan the whole space in a continuous path.

How well an app performs under challenging conditions is another important factor. Low or changing light, fast movements, rapid rotations, and surfaces with few visual features can all make tracking and reconstruction more difficult.
